Global Hack Week: Hacktoberfest

About this opportunity

Global Hack Week is MLH's monthly week-long online event: workshops, technical live streams, mini events and challenges you can do from anywhere. The October 2026 edition runs the 9th to the 15th and is dedicated to open source, tied to Hacktoberfest. It is a good first contribution experience: open source is the classic way to get public, reviewable work on your GitHub profile, and doing it inside a structured week with live sessions and a community Discord removes most of the 'where do I even start' problem. Participation is online only and no travel or team is required — you can do as much or as little of the week as you like.

Who can take part

Open to the MLH community — students and technologists at any level. Registration is through the official Global Hack Week portal.

Eligibility is copied from the organizer's own published rules — they make the final call. Confirm on the official page before you apply.

Coming later: attendees who leave genuinely useful reviews will earn credits toward paid opportunities. Nothing is being awarded yet — reviews are unpaid and unverified for now.
